Seema's Artist Statement

A little about my background story.  I was born in India, and immigrated to Canada when I was 6 years old. Then, I moved with my parents to the United States when I was 17 years old.  After high school, I studied Electrical Engineering with Computer Option and after graduation, my first job was an IT software analyst in Northern Virginia.  Another move brought me to the Lone Star State where I currently reside.  When my daughters started school in Texas,  I decided to pursue drawing, painting, and ceramics courses at a local community college.  I learned from some of the best professors in ceramics, Lee Akins, Mark Epstein, Lisa Ehrich, and Du Chau.  The tactile feel of clay to produce 3D forms was exhilarating and I was drawn to ceramics. 

Throughout my life, from the age of 10 to the present day, I have engaged in creative discovery and creative processes. I have worked creatively on art and craft projects throughout my life, whether it was drawing, sewing Halloween costumes for my children, creating string art in college, or working with macrame, crochet, and painting. At 16, I received an award for my rug hooking design.  In 2024 and 2025, I achieved several blue ribbons at the Texas State Fair for my ceramics pieces. 

My art is evolving, and it's a direct reflection of the progress and experiences I have had in my life. The mountains stand for stability, resilience, strength, determination, courage, and beauty.  We all face moments of change, love, happiness, joy, sorrow, struggle, courage, and peace. It's the experiences that guide us and define us, making us stronger and never giving up hope.  My work is inspired by nature and I believe that communing with nature not only heals one’s soul but completes it. Working with clay allows me to engage with the earth, and the imagery I apply to the forms continues this motif. I aim to bring the beauty of the natural world into your home, whether it's enjoyed during your morning coffee, at the dining table, as a decorative centerpiece, or as wall art.
